Look Back

The book of life sits in front of me,
Pages of achievement, success and failure,
Stare painfully back at me,
As I read the names of many fine people,
I cannot avoid the emotions I feel.

Tear filled eyes know that I can’t go back,
The best years lie fallen in my past,
We are now only left, with faded photographs,
And phoney nostalgic moments.

Maybe in the future, these days will be merely a fog,
An unwanted adolescent experience,
For some these days will be cherished,
An age of love and laughter.

If just once we all look back,
Take time to see it all as it was then,
We can all believe in a brighter future.

Farewell to the times we had,
Farewell to youthful classroom jokes,
Farewell to all the childhood sweethearts we hold,
“Farewell” seems such an easy word, but a painful way to go.
